Why Do Hot-rolled Coils Have Split-layer Problems?

The problem of split-layer of hot rolled coils is a difficult problem that we have faced for a long time in the production of the hot rolled coil. The appearance of a split layer brings inconvenience to the binding, spraying, and transportation of steel coil, and makes the qualified plate and tape become defective after winding, resulting in losses.

1. Causes of split-level

• The side guides were severely worn due to the clamping operation during high-speed strip passage, preventing them from contacting the strip at the designated position. This caused the strip to shift between the two guides, resulting in uneven coiling. As the number of uneven coils increased, delamination occurred.
• Cause of side guide detection component failure: The position sensor was not calibrated after replacement, resulting in a deviation between the feedback position and the actual position. This prevented the two guides from clamping the strip and triggering dynamic control. Continuous position control during strip passage caused the guides to deviate. Incorrect feedback of the actual pressure value can also cause deviating strips.
• The strip itself had uneven side edges (such as camber or rolling wave). As it passed through the side guides, it was subjected to high instantaneous forces. To protect the strip, the force control adjustment side expanded outward away from the strip to reduce the force. This caused the strip to shift between the guides due to lack of clamping, resulting in delamination.
•  The reason for the pinch roll. When the position deviation of the two sides of the pinch roll is too large or the pressure on the strip is too large, the split layer will occur.

2. Solution

• Modify the position setting of the side guide. In the case of serious wear of the side guide plate, the position setting value of the side guide plate should be reduced to make the side guide plate shrink to ensure the clamping of the strip steel; For the problem that the scythe bend of the strip steel will make the side guide too much pressure, enlarge the position setting value.
• Regularly replace the side guides and calibrate their positions. After calibration, manually open and close the side guides and switch positions. Use a tape measure to measure the opening and compare it to the position sensor feedback. Adjust the difference compensation value to correct sensor problems. Also, closely monitor the feedback from the pressure sensors on the operating and transmission sides of the side guides, and be mindful of recalibrating and replacing the sensors and receiving modules.
• Check the pinch roll regularly. The pinch roller is seriously worn and should be updated immediately; In addition, the feedback value of the pressure sensor on both sides of the pinch roller is observed and compared with the measured value of the mechanical meter in the valve station. If the deviation is too large, it should be replaced in time.
